FTP/SFTP: what it means
FTP and SFTP are ways to view your site folders on the server. Some hosts also provide “Web FTP” in their customer area. Prefer SFTP where it is offered.
1. Find your hosting access details
Look in the customer area or welcome email for “FTP”, “SFTP”, “SSH access” or “Web FTP”. You need the server address, username and password.
2. Open the site folder
Connect with your host’s tool or an FTP/SFTP client. Open the folder containing wp-config.php, wp-content and wp-admin: this is the WordPress root.
3. Upload exactly the two files you received
Free and Saver tell you which files to upload and which page to open. Do not give your credentials to wpsuite and do not replace WordPress files at this stage.
4. Do not have access?
Ask your host, agency or site creator to open SFTP or Web FTP access to the site folder. You can send this sentence: “I need to upload two files to the root of my WordPress site to run a diagnosis or recovery.”
