WordPress white screen: what to do without making the outage worse?

A white screen does not by itself mean your site was hacked. A plugin, theme, update, memory limit or changed files can cause it. Preserve the current state before deleting anything.

Do not reinstall WordPress blindly.
Reinstalling or deleting a plugin can remove context needed for recovery. Make a copy first and note the last known change.
